What is jaw-type-coupling

A typical jaw coupling is a three-piece unit consisting of two metal hubs and an elastic element. Jaw couplings can transmit high torques with little or no backlash regardless of radial or angular shaft misalignment. Claw couplings are often referred to as star couplings, and by design, they are relatively balanced couplings capable of high speed operation.

Agknx Spider couplings have polyurethane elements in 3 durometers with different operating characteristics. These performance characteristics are shown in Agknx Couplings.

While 3-piece jaw couplings can handle high torque and high speeds, they are limited in their ability to handle angular and radial misalignment. Agknx has created a range of universal joint couplings that double angular misalignment capacity and exponentially increase radial misalignment capacity.

Agknx engineers have developed a white paper “How to Choose a Coupling” to help you choose the most suitable shaft-to-shaft coupling for your application.

With agknx bore reducers, jaw couplings are compatible with almost any shaft diameter.

Jaw couplings (Star Couplings)

Jaw couplings (star couplings) are 3-piece units consisting of two aluminum hubs and an elastomer element. By design, a jaw coupling is a relatively balanced coupling capable of transmitting high torque and high speed with little or no backlash.
Agknx couplings feature curved jaw and universal jaw styles designed to absorb vibration and handle misalignment in servo, stepper and general motor applications. We offer a variety of options to meet your misalignment, speed and torque requirements.

Arc jaw couplings can handle angular shaft misalignment and small amounts of parallel misalignment. Use arc jaw couplings in applications involving minimal to moderate shaft misalignment.
The extended length of the Cardan Jaw coupling doubles the angular misalignment capacity and exponentially increases the radial misalignment capacity. Choose universal joint couplings for applications involving severe shaft misalignment.
Choosing a Flexible Jaw Coupling for Shaft Misalignment

Bore size, torque, misalignment capability and rotational speed are critical to ensuring a jaw coupling meets your performance requirements. Our resilient jaw couplings feature polyurethane star elements with a Shore hardness of 80A (blue), 98A (red) or 92A (white), with different operating characteristics. See the Radius Jaw Couplings and Cardan Jaw Couplings specification tables for details on each product’s torque ratings and torsional stiffness.
We have also developed a Misalignment Coupling Selection Guide to help you choose the best coupling for your application. This guide covers important items to consider under each performance criterion. If you have additional questions or an application with unique performance requirements, our engineers are here to help.

The Agknx CJ Jaw Coupling is a mechanical solution with improved torsional softness compared to standard Jaw Couplings. The polyurethane spider integrated into the product is designed to provide high abrasion resistance and elasticity, as well as good damping properties. These couplings are easy to install and can be used for fail-safe functions as they continue to transmit torque when the elastomer fails. Four different elastomers are available to best meet the needs of your system. Brackets are available in a variety of Shore durometers, each offering different levels of torque capacity, damping and chemical resistance. Torque Range: 35 to 309,750 lb-in (4 to 34,996 Nm) Typical Applications: Pumps, Gearboxes, Compressors, Blowers and Fans, Mixers, Conveyors, Gensets

L/AL JAW COUPLINGS

Agknx L and AL Type Jaw Couplings are Agknx Engineering specially designed coupling products. AL couplings feature aluminum hubs for reduced weight and increased corrosion protection. Type AL couplings are made from two hubs and a spider. Agknx offers the largest variety of spare hole/keyway combinations in the industry. These jaw couplings require no lubrication and are extremely reliable in all conditions. Type AL couplings use the same bracket as Type L couplings, except the AL150 has four jaws instead of three. Torque Range: 3.5 to 12,500 lb-in (0.4 to 1,412 Nm) Typical Applications: Pumps, Gearboxes, Compressors, Blowers, Mixers, Conveyors

Original Jaw Couplings

When the L-Series jaw coupling isn’t up to the task. Install our claw couplings and your problems will be solved. Jaw coupling failures are costly and time-consuming for most OEMs. We manufacture these jaw couplings in steel and cast aluminum. These jaw couplings are precision machined to ensure a perfect fit and perfect alignment in your application. You can choose neoprene padding or padding. When selecting a neoprene insert, we recommend using ferrules to help prevent excessive flexing of the insert. If you have severe applications that operate underwater or only in harsh/wet environments, we recommend our Hytrel inserts. We stock multiple sizes, with plenty of room in the driveway in case you need to send a helicopter in for an emergency (yes, that does happen sometimes).

This simple three-piece high-quality resilient jaw coupling is commonly used to connect electric motors to hydraulic pumps or mechanical drives. The hubs are made of strong, lightweight aluminum alloy. The body and lugs are precision machined on CNC equipment to ensure a proper fit every time. Two set screws are standard. Solid rubber walls in the insert eliminate metal-to-metal contact and provide clean, quiet, trouble-free performance when properly aligned. The unique steel locking insert is standard on all spline couplings from series 20 to 60. For the mobile market, the same series also offers tapered locking splines. Three insertion options are available. Neoprene, neoprene with metal ring. Neoprene is used for light or steady loads. Suitable for industrial applications where torque, various load conditions or chemicals are present. Neoprene with metal ring for medium to high torque conditions and internal combustion engine applications. Installation of these jaw couplings requires only a ruler and feeler gauge to ensure proper alignment. To prolong blade life, misalignment should not exceed 0.005 parallel or 1° angle

Curved Jaw Couplings

You can see them everywhere in shaft-to-shaft applications—maybe even at your local hardware store. The addition of our line of curved jaw couplings proves that you can rely on Agknx for all your coupling needs. Replacing your existing coupling (similar design) with an Agknx curved jaw coupling may save you some $$

This three-piece curved jaw coupling is specifically designed to reduce the edge pressure of the drive lugs against the insert. These jaw couplings are perfectly interchangeable with other German and Italian-designed products of the same type. The hubs are made of aluminum and steel. These elements or brackets are made of variable hardness polyurethane. Available in 10 sizes with bore diameters up to 110mm (4.33). Due to the compression nature of the design, these couplings are ideal for electric pumps, gearboxes, conveyor belts, and applications with opposing loads. These jaw couplings are torsionally resilient and designed to dampen operating vibrations and shock loads. Due to the crowding of the star teeth, it allows greater shaft misalignment with similarly designed couplings (straight jaws) to avoid edge stress. With its concave tooth design, the coupling is only subjected to compressive loads compared to other straight jaw couplings which are also prone to bending stress. Due to this difference in drive capacity, jaw couplings will be subject to considerably higher loads.

The Working Principle of Jaw Coupling

So far, we have a certain understanding of claw couplings and their basic uses. Let’s take a closer look at how a claw coupling works.

All elastic couplings are classified according to how their elastic elements transmit torque between the drive and driven hubs – the elements are in compression or in shear.

In jaw couplings, the elements are loaded in compression between the jaws of the mating hub. These jaws operate in the same plane, with the driving hub jaw pushing the driving hub jaw. The elastic star legs transmit damping force by compressing between the driving and driven jaws.

This is in contrast to shear couplings, where the drive and driven hubs run on different planes, with the drive hub pulling the driven hub via an elastomeric element suspended between them. Here, the elements transmit and dampen the forces between the hubs by stretching between them.

Temperature Range of Operation, Sizes, Dimensions & Materials

Jaw couplings are commonly used on large industrial machines such as pumps, blowers, compressors, mixers, etc. They are also used in smaller motion control systems. For standard power transmission applications, jaw couplings are available in a variety of shaft sizes and torque capacities, with typical bore sizes from 1/8 to 7 inches and torques from 3-1/2 to 170,000 in-lbs. usable.

Couplings are designed to operate without lubricants in many cases and to perform well in the presence of dust and other particulates. Jaws can be made of steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, and are often made of bronze, ductile iron, and powdered metal. Spiders are available in Polyurethane, Natural Rubber, Urethane, and in special cases soft metals such as Bronze for low-speed, high torque applications.

The table below shows the properties of each material commonly used in jaw couplings:

Jaw Coupling Privileges

First, jaw couplings are popular because they are versatile and durable. They are excellent general-purpose industrial power transmission couplings. They operate over a wide temperature range, can handle angular misalignment, can handle reaction loads due to misalignment, have good OD torque capability, have good speed capability, have good chemical resistance (depending on the bracket), and have good damping capacity.

They are simple and straightforward to install. A basic jaw coupling consists of only 3 main parts. Two hubs and an elastic spider or insert. Jaw couplings are fail-safe. While you should regularly check your claw coupling stars for wear and inevitably replace them, someone will forget to inspect or service a claw coupling and the spiders will wear out or fail. In this case, the coupling hubs will interlock and continue to carry the load, but without any of the damping capacity or other benefits provided by the spider, allowing the operator to quickly shut down the system.

In addition to being considered a fail-safe jaw coupling and all the other advantages already discussed above, jaw couplings are also considered maintenance-free as they do not require lubrication. Unlike gear, grid, or chain couplings that require periodic re-lubrication… as long as the spider remains intact, the jaw coupling will continue to operate without additional maintenance.
